COTTON

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae. The fiber is almost pure cellulose. Under natural conditions, the cotton bolls will increase the dispersal of the seeds.

Advantages of Cotton

  • Natural fibers free of chemicals
  • Breathable – Great option for hot weather
  • Hypoallergenic and does not irritate skin
  • Burns as opposed to melts like polyester

Disadvantages of Cotton

  • Natural fibers wear down faster
  • Holds moisture longer (can be an advantage in hot weather)
  • Prone to shrinking

COTTON INTERLOCK

Cotton interlock is a wonderful knit fabric. It is extremely soft, very warm, and a little stretchy, perfect for baby garments. It is warmer than cotton jersey or rib knit because it is a double knit construction, making it thicker and heavier than a single knit.

Advantages of Cotton Interlock

Disadvantages of Cotton Interlock

  • Natural fibers wear down faster
  • Much more heavy
  • Holds moisture longer (can be an advantage in hot weather)
  • Shirt will slightly will become bigger (but better than normal cotton)
  • Not much suitable on hot environment, depends

POLYESTER

Polyester is a generalized term for any fabric or textile, which is made using polyester yarns or fibres. It is a shortened name for a synthetic, man-made polymer, which, as a specific material, is most commonly referred to as a type called polyethylene terephthalate (PET). It is made by mixing ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. That all sounds extremely scientific, but basically, polyester is a kind of plastic.

  • Strong
  • Flexible
  • Dries quickly
  • Resists wrinkles and shrinking
  • Inexpensive

Disadvantages of Polyester

  • Tends to stick to perspiring skin
  • Not as breathable
  • Temperature sensitive
  • Subject to dye migration

MICROFIBER

Microfiber refers to a synthetic fiber which is extremely thin, even slimmer than a strand of silk. Microfiber must be finer than one denier of thread.

Viscose

Viscose fabric is one of many popular fabrics that exists and is commonly known as Rayon. Viscose material is man-made and created by weaving together fibers from cellulose that is chemically extracted from trees. Viscose makes light fabric, breathable, and great for warm summer weather.

Advantages of Viscose

  • inexpensive
  • known for its silk-like feel
  • drapes beautifully
  • breathable, similar to cotton in this regard
  • ideal for those seeking a luxurious look and feel at a more economical price point
  • blends well with other fibers, particularly woven ones
  • dyes easily and produces beautiful, vivid color

Disadvantages of Viscose

  • almost always needs to be dry cleaned
  • manufacturing process is extremely polluting and harmful to the environment, classifying it as an unsustainable fabric despite being made of natural materials (wood)
  • prone to stretching and bagging and often doesn’t recover
  • fabric is weak, and even weaker when wet
  • not recommended for use in home furnishings (due to stretch factor listed above)
  • absorbs moisture, body oils, and water, which may result in spots
  • spot treating can lead to permanent marking
